Nestled just off Steese Highway in Fairbanks, Baan Laos Khawnieow is a charming family-run Thai restaurant that brings the vibrant flavors of Thailand to the heart of Alaska. This cozy spot may be humble in size, with no traditional indoor seating and just a single shaded picnic table outside, but what it lacks in space, it more than makes up for with authentic, mouthwatering cuisine and warm hospitality.
The menu here showcases an enticing array of Thai favorites that capture the essence of home-cooked comfort with a punch of bold, intense flavors. Customers rave about dishes like the Pad Thai, described by one happy diner as the “BEST in town,” and the fiery Spicy Fried Rice, which can be customized to your heat preference – just be sure to ask for “extra spicy” if you crave a serious kick. Other standouts include the Chicken Pad See Ew and various vegetable dishes that even Thai skeptics can’t resist. Every meal arrives steaming hot, generously portioned, and bursting with fresh, vibrant ingredients that sing with authentic seasoning.
Dining at Baan Laos Khawnieow is a genuinely heartfelt experience. The owners are not only skilled in their craft but also incredibly friendly and welcoming, creating a community feel that’s rare and special. Despite the simplicity of the setting—a modest roadside shack—the love and care put into the food elevate the experience to what one reviewer aptly called “Michelin food quality.” Whether you’re stopping by after outdoor adventures or making the trip from Fairbanks, you’ll be rewarded with delicious, healthy portions that represent excellent value.
What truly sets Baan Laos Khawnieow apart is its dedication to delivering authentic Thai flavors in a cozy, down-to-earth environment. It’s a delightful culinary gem where every bite carries the warmth of a family’s passion and commitment. If you’re in Fairbanks and craving genuine Thai cuisine with a little twist of Alaskan charm, this is a destination you’ll want to return to time and again.

Amazing food here. It's a small building just off the road, no particular parking lot. No inside seating, just a single, shaded picnic table outside, but it's a lovely little area.

Love this place! Great food and the sweetest family business. “Spicy” is not very spicy, so ask for EXTRA spicy!

Relatively quick, delicious, reasonably priced food and huge servings! It’s a cute family spot. My food was still piping hot when I got home. It’s a little spicy so if you don’t like spicy at all, you may need to ask for that when ordering. I will definitely be returning. It’s nice having delicious food in our neck of the woods.

Found this place and it's next to my cabin so had to give it a try. Was extremely happy with the price, portions, and flavor. They had my food ready 5 minutes after taking my order. I've tried the fried rice at many places in Fairbanks and would say Baan Laos has the best value, I will for sure be back many times. Happy to have some good food nearby that I don't have to go to Fairbanks for. Thanks a lot!

Tried for 1st time but won't be the last. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly. Wife had Chicken pad zee ew, I had the beef pad thai. She didn't get spicy, I did. WOW! Mine was definitely spicy but delicious. Both were very hot off the stove. We got there 15 minutes before closing and got our order taken. Very grateful! Wonderful Thai Tea for wive. While mine was spicier than expected, I was offered water to cool my mouth. I had water already, but was grateful for the offer. Tried the Fried Curry Puffs too. They were delicious. I visit the Fox Park behind them often, so will definitely be back!

We love this little Thai hut. My husband really doesn’t like Thai food but he loves the mixed vegetables and the spicy fried rice here. The pad thai is the BEST in town- the portions are enough for dinner and lunch the next day: it is absolutely worth the drive to Fox.
